Rapid Selection of Active Circulating Tumor Cells Using Combined Electrical and Optical Detection in a “Lab on Chip” Platform. V. A. Kamat (Florida International University), T. Zhukov (Florida Analytical Imaging Solutions), and S. Bhansali (Florida International University)

October 2017
I. Florida Analytical Imaging Solutions makes significant progress in our major project dedicated to the production of a Lab-on-a Chip for Active Circulating Tumor Cell Selection and Analysis of Metastatic Potential.
Within the broader framework of this topic we developed two sub-projects:
  1. Automatic centrosome image feature analysis system for very early cancer diagnosis
  2. Automatic ROI Selection in Centrosome Analysis for Very Earlier Cancer Diagnosis
The input of the system is high quality and high resolution centrosome image, and output of this system is diagnosis, cancer or normal. This system provides diagnosis via automatic analysis of centrosome features in order to find abnormalities. Based on the fact that centrosome abnormalities occur at very early stage of cancer development (before a lesion can be detected) this system can detect cancer at very early stage - increasing a patients overall chances of survival. This system can be used in the diagnosis of lung cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and other cancer types.

II. Successful development of our second sub-project “Automatic ROI Selection in Centrosome Analysis for Very Earlier Cancer Diagnosis”.

We have developed new fully-automatic ROI selection software with a cancer detection accuracy rate of about 97% in our database. A new project is in progress - Work on the prototype development of “Lab-on-a Chip for Active Circulating Tumor Cells Selection and Analysis of Metastatic Potential” has initiated a new collaboration between FAIS and the Florida International University College of Engineering and Prof. Shekhar Bhansali.

Patent WO 2011008262 A2: Methods and apparatus for diagnosis and/or prognosis of cancer.
The subject invention concerns methods for the detection, diagnosis, and/or prognosis of cancer by analyzing centrosomal features. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving an image of one or more cells; selecting a region of interest in one cell; segmenting the region of interest to delineate at least one centrosomal; extracting one or more features from the segmented image; and analyzing the extracted features to diagnose cancer. In another embodiment, the progression of cancer can be predicted through analysis and classification of the extracted features. In one embodiment, the method can be performed by a quantitative cancer analysis system including a diagnosis module and/or a prognosis module. In one embodiment, the method can be performed using an image processing system. Click here to read more...

History behind the FAIS...
Fundraising In Memory of Boris Zhukov (1948 - 2007)

Picture
Boris Zhukov was a film artist, designer, and painter who lived and worked in Kiev, Ukraine before arriving to the United States. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2007, and lost his battle with the disease shortly thereafter, at the young age of 58.

Boris was a very talented artist and set designer. He was a great friend and left a bright memory in everybody who knew him. A collection of more than 50 of Boris Zhukov's paintings and drawings representing contemporary vanguard art is in the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection, Zimmerli Art Museum, NJ.

His wife, Dr. Tatyana Zhukov, is the CEO of Florida Analytical Imaging Solutions (FAIS). She has been working with a team of scientists, doctors  and researchers to develop a unique digital pathology cell/tissue based imaging system that can be used for the early diagnosis of cancer, prognosis of cancers’ progression and evaluation of cancer treatment response.

These 18 Images illustrate Boris Zhukov works from collection Of the Nonconformist Art (Early 1970's). Location of this collection is unknown, it was last seen at the Kennedy Airport in New York, on June 1990.
